A search for "drone videographer Sydney" turns up a lot of options. Here's what's actually worth checking before you book one.
A relevant portfolio matters more than a big one
A drone operator with hundreds of real estate listings in their reel isn't necessarily the right fit
for a construction or demolition site, and vice versa. Look for work that's genuinely close to your
industry: sites with scaffolding, active machinery, or restricted access, not just clean aerial shots
of open land. It tells you whether they've actually navigated the kind of constraints your site is
going to have.
Ask about licensing and insurance directly
Commercial drone work in Australia sits under CASA regulation, and legitimate operators should be
able to speak to how they handle airspace checks and approvals without hesitation. Public liability
insurance covering drone operations is worth confirming too, especially for sites near roads,
neighbouring properties or overhead structures. If an operator can't give a straight answer on either,
that's worth noting.
One operator or a crew, and who's actually on site
Some businesses book through an agency that then subcontracts the actual flight and edit to someone
else, which can mean less consistency between what you discussed and what turns up on the day. Working
with a sole operator who plans, shoots and edits the job themselves usually means fewer handoffs and a
more direct line if something about the brief needs adjusting on site.
Turnaround and communication, not just price
Price matters, but it's rarely the whole story: a cheap quote that takes three weeks to deliver isn't
necessarily better value than a slightly higher one delivered in three days, if timing matters for
your project. Ask directly what turnaround to expect and how updates are communicated during editing,
it's usually a good indicator of how the rest of the working relationship will go.
